Godfrey S. Pettit Block Term Grants

The Godfrey S Pettit Block Term Grants are competitive grants available to full time members of the Division of Respirology, University of Toronto (Lecturer level or higher) for the purpose of conducting research. These grants are be awarded on the basis of scientific merit. Priority will be given to new faculty (in the first 7 years of their appointment) and requests for funds that can be shared by more than one investigator.  The funds available per application will be $10,000, an additional $5,000 will be considered should the application presented be extremely strong and the budget well justified.

The applications will be judged by all members of the Division of Respirology Research Advisory Committee, and a minimum of one external reviewer. There will be 2 competitions each academic year, with applications due Nov 15 and April 15. A total of $50,000 will be awarded per academic year.   Funds should be spent within one year of allocation and reporting on fund use will be required prior to application for subsequent funds (see below).

Investigators who receive a Pettit Block Term grant will be expected to participate in peer review of subsequent applications, to present at Respirology Research Rounds, and at the Annual Respirology Research Day.

Division of Respirology Mentorship Award

The University of Toronto’s Division of Respirology Mentorship Award to recognize faculty who have demonstrated sustained excellence in mentoring over time. 

Mentors are a combination of teacher, sponsor, advisor, agent, role model, coach and confidant.  Effective mentorship is important to help young faculty achieve their goals and have a fulfilling career while balancing other competing interests. One definition of a mentor is “an active partner in an ongoing relationship who helps an individual (the mentee) maximize potential and reach personal and professional goals” (Ramanan et al, AM J Med 2002). This award is a way to acknowledge the contribution of the mentor and recognize the time and effort they have given.


Faculty in the Division of Respirology may nominate a clinician or researcher faculty member within the Division who they feel has been an outstanding mentor.


Applications should include the name of the nominee with a short signed letter on letterhead (maximum 750 words) outlining why this individual has been an exceptional mentor with examples to support the nomination. Applicants cannot receive this award more than once every 5 years.

Sheldon Mintz Undergraduate Teaching Award in Respirology


To recognize excellence in teaching, educational leadership and educational administration at the undergraduate level of members of the Division of Respirology at the University of Toronto.


Candidates may be nominated by faculty or students.
A candidate may be nominated based on one or more of the following criteria:

  • Has received high average Teaching Effectiveness (TE) scores on medical student evaluations provided for pre-clerkship and clerkship teaching.
  • Has demonstrated consistent excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Has provided exemplary service to the division as an educational leader and administrator at the undergraduate level.

All winners should be an exemplary role model for medical students, demonstrating the CANMEDs roles with distinction. Basic scientists in the division, should demonstrate the role of translational research and the importance of basic science to the practice of medicine.

Selection Process

The selection committee will be made up of the Division Director, senior members of the executive of the division, and the chief medical resident of the Postgraduate Training Committee.

In the case of nominations based on category 1) The selection committee will be provided with a list of the faculty obtaining the top three average TE scores from the previous year. These scores must be derived from at least four (4) individual student evaluations and must be derived from all available scores. The division director will survey all TE scores for nomination and consideration for the award. In addition to the average TE score, individual components of the evaluation and comments made by the students that describe the teacher as an excellent role model will be considered.

In order for nominations to be considered, the nominators and/or nominees must provide supporting documentation for the candidate in the form of a curriculum vitae and/or teaching dossier. The nominees will be notified in advance to submit these supporting documents.

Any individual having already received the award within the previous five years will not be eligible.

Research Awards

Outstanding Research Trainee Award, and the Excellence in Research Faculty Award. 

The awards will be given for a body of research, or a specific high impact manuscript, novel product, or discovery/observation that has a significant impact on policy development, for example.  The focus in achievement in research as opposed to mentoring/teaching in research.  Any faculty, staff or trainee in the division of respirology can put forward a nomination. The individual nominating will be required to write a letter supporting their nomination and  detailing the research that prompted the nomination. One letter is adequate, but multiple letters will be of greater impact.  The RAC will review the nominations and select the winner.  It is a non-monetary award. The award will be given at the Annual Respirology Research Day in June
